Design

Founded in 1937, the National Gallery of Art is one of the United States' preeminent art institutions. With nearly four million visitors each year, the website was long-overdue for a redesign to modernize the collection, improve the visitor experience, and also elevate the museum's research component.

Modernization

We started with a scalable design system to better mirror the offering of the physical space, giving users more depth to artists, artwork and ongoing exhibtions.

Elevating Research & Storytelling

The National Gallery of Art has a rich and rigorous research component, but little to none of it was present on the website. We developed storytelling tools that could show general audiences what the curatorial and research staff saw in pieces from the collection.

A Focus on Visitors

While the digital property was given a new lease on life, like many institutions increasing visitation is the primary goal. Catering to both D.C. tourists and seasoned art-lovers, we gave guests clearly defined touchpoints for planning a visit and discovering the museum through key pieces of art.
